World Islam Day was declared on 23 February in memory of The Last Sermon (Khutbah) of Prophet Muhammad. (20 February 2009)
On 23 February, it has been declared as “World Islam Day”. Mustafa Akkus, the writer and publisher, who suggested this idea, explained that he petitioned to the organizations such as Organization of the Islamic Conference, Presidency of Religious Affairs and UN (United Nations) on this subject.
23 February 632 is the date, when Prophet Muhammad, the Last Messenger of God, read the Last Sermon (Khutbah) to the people, the Last Verse of Koran (Koran, Mâide 3) inspired, and as a result it is the date, when Islam was brought a completion. The Last Sermon, which was read to over 100.000 people in Mecca during the Last Pilgrimage (Hajj), is like the sum and summary of the Islam declaration. This message, which makes a mention of many subjects; from the most fundamental rights such as security of life and property, chastity and faith to woman rights, and which calls out to not only Muslims but also all mankind, has enlightened centuries. With this sermon (khutbah), which was given exactly 1316 years before The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the universal values of Islam have been presented to all mankind.
Accordingly, 23 February has been declared as “World Islam Day” in order to remember and benefit from the prosperity of this soulful day. As the day of 23 February 2009 to be the first all Muslims and all mankind have been invited to celebrate this day. Some values such as justice, law, brotherhood, peace, safety and belief which are presented to mankind by Islam can be processed on this day. It is possible to make the light beams of the Last Sermon of Muhammad, which has been enlightening centuries, a current issue.
In a platform where some special days such as The Memorial Day of Jewish Massacre, World Meteorological Day, No Smoking Day, International Day of Co-operatives, World Television Day, International Mine Awareness Day, The World Day against Desertification and Drought are adopted, there is no any reason for World Islam Day not to be accepted or non-existence, or that is a huge lack.
While all people in general and all Muslims in special celebrate World Islam Day, owner of the idea has owed to send greetings and salavat to Prophet Muhammad, who reached this holy message to us, and has completed his message with this verse of Koran: “greetings to the messengers sent by Allah, fortunately to Allah, who is the god of all the worlds.”
